I recently purchased the Monitor 75T floor standing speakers for use in my media room. I already had the Monitor 70 Series II as part of my main family room home theater, so I thought I'd do a little side-by-side comparison.
You can see the specs and features of each speaker here:
Monitor 70 Series II
Monitor 75T
In 2011, I purchased the Monitor 70s for $220/ea on sale. In 2013, I got the same price for the 75T. Awesome
So here they are, standing side-by-side:
Cat used for scale purposes:
I played 4 songs (Mario - Because she said hi, Frou Frou - Must be dreaming, Mozart - Requiem, Carl Orff - Carmina Burana) and 1 movie (Lords of the Rings: Return of the King) as my test.
Speakers were plugged into an Onkyo TX-NR609 which was set to Stereo only. The subwoofer was left unplugged, so the only sound came from the 2 speakers themselves. The receiver was set in Bi-Amp mode, for whatever good that does (next to nothing since the speakers have passive crossovers).
Anyway, all that to say the conditions were the same for each test (same receiver, same settings, same bi-amp configuration, same songs, same movie, same room, same cat..)
My personal feelings:
I have absolutely loved the Monitor 70s so my expectations were high for the 75T models. The 70s produce a great range of lower-mid to high frequencies and have crystal clear definition. They can produce lower bass, but not with a great deal of power or feeling. They really need to be paired with a sub. Some lower frequencies can actually hit pretty hard, but this is more in the 200Hz+ range. Unfortunately, without a sub, this can make the bass sound inconsistent. With a sub, everything sounds perfect. The highs are super clear, and voices sound amazing. Special effects of course are stunning. The clashes, clanks and slashes of medieval battle make it sound like your own head was being lopped off.
The 75T was nearly identical in all its qualities, but with a few exceptions. The speakers seem capable of slightly (and I mean slightly) lower frequencies, with a little more power. Still, a sub is required for full effect. The highs are just as clear, but perhaps not quite as ear-piercing. I'm not sure if it was slightly attenuated, or just more controlled.
At the end of the day, you'd be hard pressed to really discern a difference between the 2 sets. I would say that the 75Ts are just as good as the 70s, and there is no need for hesitation if you're thinking about buying. They go on sale frequently on NewEgg and are an incredible value! If you have 10x their price in disposable cash, I guess you might look at a different brand or set, but honestly, be prepared to spend that much more to get anything 'better.' I'm honestly not sure if anything other than scientific instrumentation could detect the difference in more expensive gear.
Happy shopping, and I hope this helps everyone understand the slight differences in the new set.

Thanks for the write up. I've suspected the 75's were nearly identical to the 70's. It's good to hear from someone with first hand experience with both. I once tested the 70' s against the tsi500's and heard no real difference between the two in my room.
Have you ever heard the 70's powered by a 200 watt amp? I've got my 70's running off an xpa-5 and they can sure hit the lower frequencies with more authority then the did being ran off my denon 1611 or onkyo 809.

I don't need snobs to tell me how to think, thank you!

No, the only thing I've heard them powered by is the Onkyo receiver. I'll be purchasing another Onkyo unit whenever one goes on a decent sale.. I got the TX-NR609 for $196 new on Amazon, and I'm holding out hope that a similar sale will occur for the TX-NR616 or 717 models.. But even then, I assume the output would be very similar. The 717 would definitely give it more juice, but the 609 I have now already pushes them past comfortable listening levels at approximately 70%

I like the new look of the 75 and 65. Agree that for the money they are excellent speakers. I own the Monitor 70 II, and they sound excellent. I regret not buying the CS2 when it was available and on sale for $99.99.

You still looking for a CS2 Gus? The price isn't all that bad.

Just a quick note for anyone who is concerned about overall width, since the feet protrude:
The actual overall width including the feet is 9.5' but the feet are easily removable. Here's a pic showing the screws in the feet. Nevermind the tape measure.. perspective is just bad in this shot

I have one Monitor 70 that I purchased used for 50$. Since the 75t is on sale right now, do you think I could pair one m75t with one m70? Or would the timbre be off?

The timbre would definitely be off, but not by much. However, if you play movies/music at high volume, I think it would be enough to bother you. Also, the tweeter is a tad higher on the 75t, so it might even sound 'uneven' to your ears, but depends on the acoustics of your room. I would not recommend it..

Glad you posted your review, Adoniram. I know people have been wondering how similar the Monitor II series and the new Monitor T designated speakers are.

Even though I have the 75T's, I think the 70's look A LOT better. haha.
The tweeter is also more ear level on the 70, but whatever.
Positioning looks a bit different than in that pic, that was the rough draft.

Thanks for this. I got a pair of Monitor 70's and have been kicking myself for not getting more to finish my set.
Quick question, I have a cs2 for the front. Should I put the Monitor 70's in the front, the 75T's, or does it really matter?

Doesn't really matter. The CS2 will timbre match either set. Just whatever looks best to you.

I haven't done a side-by-side comparison of the 25C versus the CS2, but I would bet they are also very similar. Given that it's a center speaker (and isn't matching another unit somewhere else in the room), I'd say you were safe with either.

So that means TSi500, Monitor 70-II and Monitor 75T are kind of all the same..meaning no big sound difference?
I have a pair of TSi300 and would like to upgrade, but keep my CS2
TSi500 or Monitor 75T or 70-II?
Looks like I can't find Monitor 70 anymore (1st serie)...( I am looking for the Cherry color)
By the way, what's the difference between Monitor 70 and 70_II?

The 75T is now $180 each at the Egg with the always popular promo code, expires 04/20/13.
I have fronts which I built from Madisound and have high quality MTM components, but only 5' mid/woofers right at $400 pair. I was looking for a tower I can bi-amp with my Onkyo 717, but I don't know if this is the upgrade I am looking for.
Your review is very compelling, because I don't trust any of the 'reviews' pro or con that are listed on the Egg or Amazon. Thanks for posting the review.

Bi-amping with AVRs doesn't really accomplish much (if anything). The real benefit of bi-amping comes from active crossovers and separate amps. With AVRs is more marketing gimmick than benefit.

Just picked up two. I have onkyo 818 to power these. I also would like to buy a 25c and 45b to complete. This sound good? I have two 12' dayton 1200 to go with these when the set is complete. Would there be an advatage to go 7.1? Saw a post where a guy used another pair of 75t for fronts. Overkill?

I just picked up this exact same set (75t, 25c, & 45b) to go along with a PSW505 sub and a Denon AR1613 receiver. Should all arrive today (except the 75ts will be in tomorrow). Needless to say I'm like a kid waiting to open up my Christmas presents since this is my first dive into anything more than a $200 HTIB.

I would complete the set but the 25c is not in stock at Newegg. I see it went on sale for $130 a few days ago. This could be the reason for it being out of stock. I am also excited because I currently have the Jamo s420 as my current setup. Someone also recommended the Klipsch rf-42 series instead of the monitor 75t set. Any thoughts on this?

The sale must have been why out of stock. Newegg ran a 4 day sale, and that's when I ordered mine and they have shipped. Glad to hear I got to them before they were out. I also thought about the RF-42s instead of the 75ts. They looked very comparable, but I like the look of the 4 drivers as opposed to two. Plus, this way my whole set matches. I've heard nothing but good things about the RF-42s, but haven't seen them in person.

There's never too much amp power. And you need the power to listen to music at LOW volumes, if your amp is not powerful enough you will lose half of the details, dynamics and bass . Another reason, with a weaker amp/receiver you are more likely to fry your tweeters.

In that you are very wrong. A small step up, let's say to RTiA 5 would make a noticeable difference. And if you go all the way to RTiA 9 paired with 600 watt monoblocks ( Emotiva XPA-1 Gen2 ) - the difference will be night and day. The depth and width of the soundstage, the body and richness of the sound. And that's just Polk Audio, an average Joe speaker brand.

Polk Audio Monitor Series New Monitor 65T Three-Way Ported Floorstanding Loudspeaker (Black) Single
The name 'Monitor' adorned the speakers that first made Polk famous. Monitor means simple, sturdy construction, clear, accurate sound, powerful bass and superior imaging (all at a surprising price). This new Monitor is classic Polk: a quality-built, affordable line of high performance loudspeakers for music and home theater. They are highly efficient, so they can be driven easily by unpretentious receivers, and they are voice-matched for lifelike surround sound environments. The Monitor Series boasts a stylish look that complements today's flat screen technology, with wood grain finishes and modern Titanium faces. Built for sound quality and value, the Monitor Series is a great introduction to high performance sound.
The New Standard for Classic Performance
The Monitor 65T is a great compromise between size and performance (performance always comes out on top). With a high efficiency enclosure design, the 65T reveals the classic Polk sound (open, spacious and clear) even when driven by modestly-powered amplifiers and receivers. For stereo music, or big home theater front-stage thrills.

Pros: I never write reviews but for the price I have to say how pleased I am with these speakers. Great sound, If you stumble upon these speakers, you will be amazed. For the price there is nothing that can compare. I want to state here when I first connected them I was disappointed, they were very harsh. If you buy these speakers please give them at least a hundred hours to break in. I've had them for several months now and they keep getting better. I just can't say how good they sound for the price I paid, there is nothing under $500 that is better.
Cons: They really need to be broken in good, for me they started sounding better after about 70 to 80 hours. They won't be at their best until at least 100 to 150 hours.
Blade and soul gold hack download. Overall Review: Just Don't give up on them until you have had them a while.
Ownership: more than 1 year
Pros: warm sound, crisp highs, price.Doesnt need a lot of power to drive, though you will want to give at least 150 w to fully open it potential. As a lot of people here stated got it after long research(kept coming back, lol)
Cons: Style-classic lines might not be for everybody-NOT the egg taker
Overall Review: Using it for fronts L/F in home theater set up.75% movies,25% music. For low bass complaints subwoofer with crossover set at 50-60. in the receiver is an answer.Overall very good quality speakers with great sound.
Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
Pros: Excellent imaging crisp and accurate highs with precise low frequency reproduction. The great thing with polk is the price, the quality and the low power needed for such great sound. I first purchased my first polks about 20 years ago. I was puting together a surround system. I,m a sound engineer tec and installer and did some home installations for high end customers and of coarse high end equipment. Bose just came out with there Bose system. I compared the three top speakers at the time and Polk had more output and clean and clear and crisp. Plus in the field they last. And with a 5 year warrenty They even replace the grills that got broken when moving. And replaced a speaker cabinet that broke after 8 years and past the warrenty. Polk works best as a system:meanig buy all polk speakers when putting together a system. You will not be disapointed.
Cons: none.
Overall Review: If your not use to buying speakers monitor speaker that have a series (system) Center Sub-woofer front surrounds. Then you get great sound. each speaker with Polk are so perfectly designed to do a certain job at a certain range that's it.
Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
Pros: I decided to get these in replace of my Samsung Home Theater of 200 watt max.
Sounds super crystal clear and crisp with some minor adjustments on my receiver of course.
Also came undamaged and in great condition.

Cons: The bass is not good at all keep that in mind. but that is expected. I plan on getting a huge subwoofer for this build soon as I can.

Dollar for dollar best speakers I could find for the money!4/23/2014 12:24:05 AM
Pros: Great SOUND: I love the combination of warm, clear yet not harsh sound that comes from these speakers. (I hear this is the Polk sound)
Great PRICE: I got these on sale here at the Egg for $149.99+tax and $3.99 shipping. Total for 2 + $326.47 shipped. You' d="" be="" hard="" pressed="" to="" find="" something="" comparible="" in="" sound="" quality="" for="" a="" comparable="">
Great STYLE: Style is very personal. To me I love the look of these speakers. I feel they match well with the modern day flat panel HDTVs. Having the port in the front makes it easier to place them as you don't have to worry about sound quality if they are closer to a wall. Some don't like the grill and newer logo but I think it all looks really cool.
SIZE and SHAPE: Although these can be tall for some they are also pretty slim so it will fit in most living/bed room spaces.
EASY SETUP: I got them out of their boxes, set up and in use in minutes.
QUALITY BUILT: Everything still working and sounding great. No issues there.
PACKAGING: Polk does a great job packaging their speakers. Huge box with Styrofoam on the top bottom and middle of each speaker. One box had a decent sized hole it but my speakers survived without a scratch on it. (I don't care if a box gets damaged as long as the goods are unharmed)
DELIVERY SPEED: Paid the extra $3 to NewEgg for the 3 day shipping. Got my speakers on the 3rd day! Love how quickly they arrived.
Polk WARRANTY: 5-Year Limited Warranty on Home Audio Speakers. Gives me more peace of mind that I am covered if there is an issue. Also longer warranty has me thinking that they have quality products that aren't always breaking down.
CUSTOMER SERVICE: I have read more customers say Polk has a good customer service reputation than not.

Cons: None so far. :)
BUT I do want to say MAKE SURE your metal BINDING POSTs are IN THEIR PROPER PLACE and are tightened. 2 nights ago I had replaced my bare wire with banana plugs and noticed that my right channel was not sending sound through the tweeter. I couldn't figure out why and started to think my tweeter was blown. I emailed polk about the problem and started the process to get it replaced when I decided to go online and look up how to replace Polk tweeter. I ran across a Polk tech giving advice on one of the Polk forums. He said that it is common for customers to think their tweeter is not working or that one of the woofers are defective when the real problem is simply making sure the BINDING POST is IN PLACE. So I go to the back of my Right channel speaker and that was exactly my problem. The binding post slipped out of place and was no longer connected. Once I fixed that my tweeter was working again. I canceled my replacement tweeter order. SO happy I didn't have to replace any parts and can enjoy my sound as expected.
Although (not that there is any problem with these but,) I do wish I caught the 75Ts on sale. I think they would have an even bigger sound with the 4 x 6.5 woofers. But I am pretty content for now with my 65Ts. Probably will upgrade to 75Ts in the future and move these to the back as rear surrounds for a 7 channel setup. :)

Overall Review: I bought two of these 65Ts in 10/2013 after weeks (because I HATE regret) of researching online and listening to comparable speakers in the price range. I narrowed it down to Polk/Klipsch/and the second version of the budget Andrew Jones Pioneer speakers. Although I heard good things about each of the three (especially the rave reviews AJ Pios got) after listening to them in person, I felt the Polks were the best of the bunch. From day one to now I Couldn't be happier with the sound I'm getting especially for what I paid. (I am not an audiophile, nor do I play one on TV but,) I like to think I know good sound when I hear it and, IMHO The 65T offers very good sound, for both movies (which is what I primarily use it for) and music alike. I have come to realize that I really like warm sounding music and Polk has a unique sound that is both warm as well as very clear on the vocals and effects without sounding harsh to your ears. Loved these speakers so much that I purchased a CS2 from the Egg on sale for $119.99 to have matching LCR channels in the front.
The 65T is probably the best in it's class. In terms of price you could definitely do worse than these speakers but you would be hard pressed to find better. Especially if you catch these on sale like I did. NewEgg Polk store tends to have sales on their stuff often enough that if you are patient, you could get a lot for a little. ;)
I totally recommend these speakers to anyone starting out in home theater. Great way to hit the ground running.

Pros: I always wanted to have these speakers. I have an Onkyo home theater 5.1. The sound was good but I wanted more details specially when listening to jazz, guitar solos or acoustic music. I replace the front right and left. These speakers deliver what I want. It fills the room beautifully. Sadly, I live in a coop building my neighbor downstairs is a cranky old man who stays at home all day I can't listen to these speakers at its full potential. I'm satisfied. A pretty good deal when they are on sale $129 each plus 10% off using Vme card and free shipping. Thanks newegg.
Ubisoft far cry 4 forum. Cons: None
Overall Review: When I received these Speakers the Superintendent of the building looked at me in a skeptical way. These boxes are huge and a little bit heavy. At least I know they are well package. Thankfully the are not so big when I open it. The internal speakers dimensions are 37' H x 7' W x 12 1/16' D. The Weight (each): 31 lbs.

Bad Tweeter--But Great Customer Service4/4/2014 3:57:06 PM
Pros: Great Bank for the Buck.Great sound.I bought these after having a pair of TSI-300' s="" as="" an="" upgrade.i'm="" pushing="" them="" with="" an="" onkyo="" tx-sr707="" (100="" watts="" per="" channel).they="" sound="" incredible,="" but="" you="" really="" should="" have="" a="" powered="" sub="" woofer.not="" a="" lot="" of="" meat="" on="" the="" bottom="" end,="" but="" i="" expected="" that.="" very="" clean.i="" think="" my="" next="" polk's="" i'll="" spend="" the="" money="" and="" go="" with="" the="" rti's--been="" very="" happy="" with="" these="">
Cons: Bad Tweeter or Cross-over.The tweeter on one speaker as gone out twice in three months. Not a problem for the first year I owned these..I don't even crank this thing.Polk Customer service as been exceptional dealing with this.without question, Tweeters have been mailed out for replacement. My Tech Rep and myself are trying to figure out the issue. They are prompt and professional in their responses and don't leave you hanging with issues. That alone speaks volumes nowadays (no pun intended!!)
Overall Review: I'll continue buying polk speakers--although, I think i'm gonna drop some real money on my next round.maybe in a year or so..I'd give these a 5 egg rating if it wasn't for the tweeter issue.
Ownership: less than 1 day
